A Survey of the View of Contemporary Commentators on the Verse 18 of Zukhruf

Despite the Holy Qur'an`s confession of men and women`s inherent dignity, equal means of acquiring faith and righteous actions, and mental powers, most of the contemporary commentators have viewed the verse 18 of Surah Zukhruf as signifying decrease of women's intellectual power in comparison with that of men. As viewed by this commentators, the two women`s attributes mentioned in the verse, i.e. interest in jewelry and weakness in expressing their intentions in conflict, lie in women's social and psychological status and God-given characteristics, and signify woman's decrease in intelligence. On the other hand, a small group of contemporary commentators have opposed such an understanding. This article, with a descriptive-analytical method, after examining the context of the discussed verse and reflecting on the subject, came to the conclusion that, contrary to the view of most contemporary commentators, the women`s two characteristics are not inherent and unchangeable. There is no essential connection between a woman's interest in ornaments and tenderness, but these attributes can be changed through education and acquisition, and it is possible to strengthen and develop a woman's intelligence. In addition, the former view shows that of that ignorant age and no Islamic educational systems.
