Abstract: (227 Views)
The term qalb (heart) constitutes one of the fundamental and multilayered concepts within Qur’anic discourse and has continually attracted the attention of Qur’anic exegetes and scholars. This study aims to investigate the semantic dimensions of the term qalb within the existential domain of the human being, employing the method of Qur’anic semantics and drawing upon library resources and exegetical software tools. An examination of 132 occurrences of this term in the Noble Qur’an demonstrates that qalb functions within a semantic network associated with concepts such as ṣadr (chest), shaghāf (the inner core of the heart), and fu’ād (heart/mind) along the paradigmatic axis, indicating that each of these concepts refers to particular inner and existential levels of the human being. Within the syntagmatic axis, the term qalb appears in association with concepts such as salīm (sound), munīb (penitent), mukhbit (humble), marīḍ (diseased), al‑a‘mā (blind), and zaygh (deviation), reflecting diverse ethical, cognitive, and psychological dimensions of human existence. The findings indicate that the concept of qalb in the Qur’an does not merely refer to the emotional or physical dimension of the human being; rather, it denotes the cognitive, volitional, and decision‑making center of human existence and functions as the locus of inner transformation and guidance in the formation of the believer’s character. The hierarchical levels of ṣadr, shaghāf, qalb, and fu’ād together form a structure that is simultaneously hierarchical and interactive, organizing the gradual yet dynamic process of the human spiritual journey.
