Attention to the semantic coherence of a contextual flow of verses in the Holy Quran can yield profound and valuable results in exegesis. Among the instances that can reveal the usefulness of this method is the examination of verses 5 to 12 of Surah As-Saffat, relying on the semantic cohesion of words and sentences. Verses 11 and 12, in the exegeses of both major Islamic schools of thought, have been interpreted as reprimanding disbelieving humans and reminding them that God created them from worthless matter. This interpretation, which is one of the oldest exegeses that has reached the present time with the least alteration, is related more to the presuppositions of the exegetes than to the apparent meaning of the verses. Paying attention to the contextual evidence, especially the connection of these two verses with verses 5 to 10, reveals that the prevailing atmosphere of these verses is directed toward honoring and exalting humanity and highlighting a latent capability in their creational structure, which is the source of distinction and superiority of humans over other creatures, especially the Jinn. In this context, God refers to a dimension of the human being that He created from “Tin Lazib” (sticky clay) and through which He has granted humans the ability to benefit from the heavens, whereas He has deprived the devils of any access to the heavens. This dimension of the human being is their “Barzakhi body” (intermediate body), which acts as an intermediary between the soul and the material body. The method of the present research relies on the arrangement and sequence of Quranic words and phrases, because no collocation in Quranic phrases is devoid of wisdom.
