Understanding the concept of “Ruh” (Spirit) in the verses of the Holy Quran has always been a subject of scientific scrutiny among Islamic scholars. Disagreements in defining the interpretive referents of this term within the corpus of Quranic verses highlight the necessity of examining this word using modern methods of text comprehension within the field of linguistics. The present paper, employing a descriptive-analytical method and library-based data collection, emphasizes structural semantics and focuses on the syntagmatic and paradigmatic relations of words to answer the question of what “Ruh” is in the verses of the Holy Quran. The research findings indicate that the reality of the Spirit in the Quranic verses is independent and signifies a flow of guidance and assistance of existence in the two paths of genesis (takwin) and legislation (tashri’) to achieve the goals of creation. This understanding is manifested in the verses related to the creation of Jesus (PBUH), his divine endorsement, and the flow of revelation to the Prophet (PBUH). Furthermore, in the course of human creation, the Spirit is the guiding flow of the path toward human spiritual transcendence, and the concept of the Spirit is not considered the objective equivalent of the human immaterial dimension.
