Abstract:   (81 Views)
Pleasure is among the most fundamental realities flowing through human life, and indeed the life of all sentient beings. The discussion of pleasure has been addressed both in philosophy -particularly within psychology (‘ilm al-nafs)- and in experimental psychology. Furthermore, the concept of pleasure or similar words, near-synonymous, and allied terms, is significantly employed in the Holy Qur’an. This research explores the conceptual framework of the word “pleasure” (ledhdhat) and its allied terms in the Holy Qur’an; thus, the central problem of this inquiry is the analysis of the nature of pleasure and its linguistic network in the Qur’an. This study is conducted using a conceptual analysis and elucidation method. Based on the findings, pleasure is defined as a pleasant sensation based on perception and a perceived object (mudrak) that is compatible with one’s nature (tab‘). Terms such as Tamattu‘ (enjoyment), Bahjah (delight), Surur (joy), Shahwah (desire/lust), Nadrah (radiance), Farah (exultation), Marah (insolence), Hawa (caprice), and Itraf (opulence) are among the similar or allied concepts. Some of these concepts carry a positive value-load, such as Surur and Bahjah, while others carry a negative value-load, such as Marah and Itraf. Furthermore, some are primarily used regarding worldly pleasures, some refer to otherworldly pleasures, and others are applicable in both domains. In addition, the relationships between these concepts and the core concept of pleasure are elucidated. The objective of this research is to provide a foundation and prepare the preliminaries for more extensive studies regarding the reality and essence of pleasure in the Holy Qur’an.
