Abstract:   (482 Views)
In the Qur’an, concepts such as kayd (strategic plotting) and makr (devising a plan) are attributed both to human beings and to God. When applied to humans, these attributes denote negative actions; however, when attributed to God, they signify positive and purposeful acts. Employing an analytical–descriptive and critical methodology and drawing upon primary exegetical sources, this study examines the attribution of kayd in verse 76 of Sūrat Yūsuf, focusing on the interpretations presented in Majmaʿ al-Bayān and Ta’wīlāt Ahl al-Sunnah. The findings indicate that al-Ṭabrisī understands kayd in this verse as a divinely inspired strategy He taught to Prophet Joseph (peace be upon him) to use it in response to the malicious intentions of his brothers. Al-Māturīdī, however, proposes two possible interpretations: the first corresponds closely with al-Ṭabrisī’s understanding; the second interprets kayd as God’s instruction to Joseph regarding the method of inspection, so that his brothers would not assume that he Knows it at first and suspect that he had intentionally retrieved the measuring cup from his brother’s belongings. Although this latter interpretation may initially appear consistent with the apparent meaning of the verse, it does not harmonize with the contextual flow of the preceding verses—which describe entering the cup in Benjamin’s baggage—nor does it rest firmly upon established exegetical principles. By contrast, al-Ṭabrisī’s interpretation and al-Māturīdī’s first view demonstrate stronger consistency with the narrative reality and authoritative interpretive foundations.
