Verse 34 of Sūrat al-Nisāʾ is among the most delicate Qurʾānic verses addressing social and familial relations and has consistently attracted the attention of exegetes. One of its key expressions is the phrase “ḥāfiẓātun lil-ghayb” (“guarding in the unseen”), which delineates a particular responsibility for women. This study aims to clarify the meaning of ghayb in this verse and to explicate the scope of the responsibilities derived from it for women. The research employs a descriptive–analytical method based on an examination of classical and contemporary exegetical sources and the interpretive views of early and later Qurʾānic commentators. The findings indicate that ḥifẓ al-ghayb in this verse refers primarily to women’s ethical and religious duties during the absence of their husbands. Most exegetes interpret ghayb as encompassing chastity, observance of divine boundaries, protection of property, safeguarding marital rights, care for children, and preservation of family secrets. Adherence to these principles plays a significant role in strengthening marital relationships and diminishing psychological and social harms within the family institution. From a religious perspective, such commitment constitutes a divine obligation with both individual and social functions. While the verse points to the mutual duties of men and women, it particularly underscores the pivotal role of women in preserving the family structure-the cornerstone of social well-being. This perspective aligns with the justice-oriented approach of Islamic culture. Examples like: preserving chastity, observing the divine limits and safeguarding the secrets of family have Quranic affirmations; whereas traditional interpretations emphasize these concrete obligations, some feminist-leaning readings understand the phrase not as expressing mere obedience, but rather as highlighting the moral and spiritual virtues of righteous women.
