Causes of the Immunity of Prophets and the Friends of Allah (Awliyā’) from Grief and Fear in the Interpretation of the Verse: “There Shall Be No Fear Upon Them, Nor Shall They Grieve”

The verse “There shall be no fear upon them, nor shall they grieve”, which appears in 17 instances throughout the Holy Qur’an, depicts the exalted and distinguished status of the believers, identifying the absence of fear (khawf) and grief (huzn) as one of their unique privileges. Conversely, there are verses that present fear and grief as human and moral characteristics of believers, in a way that, identifying prophets and righteous individuals by these traits. These two distinct approaches necessitate a precise analysis of the nature of fear and grief in states of stability and instability, highlighting the need to examine the differences between them. By categorizing fear and grief into two domains -worldly (dunyawi) and otherworldly (ukhrawi)-, and based on the analysis of the aforementioned verse, this study argues that the negation of fear and grief refers to the worldly aspect. Furthermore, the manifestations of fear and grief that are praised and divinely recognized are linked to the otherworldly dimension. Based on this explanation, prophets, the Friends of Allah (Awliyā’), and true believers remain immune to worldly fear and grief due to their cognitive and spiritual growth, or they manage these emotions through the acquisition of patience (sabr) and forbearance (hilm). Moreover, Qur’anic verses indicate that if prophets and believers experience worldly grief or fear within the framework of their human nature, divine assistance (imdad al-ilahi) intervenes to aid them, thereby removing such worldly emotions from their existence. |
